Jan 2022: Let Next Year NOT Be A Lemon, with Robert Garnham

from Today's Calls: Pandemic Pieces on BBC Radio Devon by Kimwei

/

lyrics

A poem for Sarah Gosling’s Christmas show 2021 - a collaboration between the new Bard of Exeter, Robert Garnham (Professor of Whimsy) and the Grand Bard of Exeter Kimwei McCarthy, ‘celebrating’ 2021 and contemplating what the new year might bring.

R The flavour of nothing
In a nothing year,
In which nothing happened,
after a year
in which nothing COULD happen.

K 2021!
2020’s pale imitator
The sequel no-one asked for,
A year that leaves us all exclaiming
“ok so that happened…
..or rather didn’t happen.”

R But that’s not quite true, is it?
Many things almost happened!
We almost won the World Cup
It was only one right foot away!
Lewis almost won the formula one
Making him an almost record breaker.

K Half of HS2 won’t happen now,
So, we’ll have to walk the rest.
We almost went to Glastonbury,
But then we didn’t.
You see, nothing happened!

R But that’s not true at all!
2021 offered us a real boost!
It was the year that redefined the phrase
“single, or double?”
Megan and Harry left in a hurry
(Prince Phillip more slowly).

K Sir David took COP26 to task,
Whilst Tokyo brought us medals for pedals.

R Emma ran straight from her A-level exams
To the tennis Grand Slam,
and Wham Bam!

K More of THAT please
I sure hope SOMETHING happens in 2022.
My new year’s resolution is,
To raise a glass of fizz,
and never again get in a tis
about 2021 and all that biz.

R On to horizons new,
Planet Earth we say to you,
“Get well soon! It’s long overdue.”

K I’m hoping for vacations for all -
two maybe three,
so we can all be double or triple vacated.

R Let’s dance madly into a summer haze,
Time’s eternal march into sunnier days,
Wellies at the ready for the festival phase.

K Yes, let’s make the coming year our heaven,
And hope to God it won’t be a lemon,

R Spread love and kindness throughout Devon,
Spread jam on scones, not omicrom.
And we’ll change the world with cake and tea.

K You wait and see, we’ll all agree
How much better we’ll be, come 2023.
